4. Testing a service name

The second important element on the Oracle Network Configuration is a file called TNSNAMES.ORA. This is one of Oracle net work technique to connect clients to the database server.

Go to Start > Programs > Oracle Home > Configuration and Migration Tools >, then select the Net Manager option.

In the Oracle Net Configuration section, expand the Local item. In the Local item, you can create, delete, or change a database default user profile, service naming, and listeners.

List all Service Names

Click on the + sign next to the Service Naming item. This will list all of the Service Name in the TNSNAMES file. A Service Name tells PC client where your database server is, what type of protocol to use, and what port the listener is using.

Create a Service Name

To create a Service Name, highlight the Service Naming item and then click on the Green + sign (Create icon). In the Net Service Name Wizard: Welcome window, type your net service name (myaccess). Click Next.

Changing Protocol

In the Protocol window, select TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) option and click Next.

In the Protocol Setting window, enter your server name if it was defined in the Domain Server Name or its IP address. Type also its port number that the listener is using such as 1521. And then click Next.

Database Connection Type

In the Service window, type your instance name and make your connection type as a dedicated server. Use dedicated server if you dont have so many connection at the same time. Use the share server or MTS (Multi-Threaded Server) if you have a lots of user accessing to your database at one given time. Click Next.

Test Connection

Click on the Test button to test the connection. If failed check the userid and password. To change the userid and password, you should click on the Change Login push button on the window. Type the right userid and password (SYSTEM/MANAGER) and click OK to close the window. In the Connection Test window, click on the Test button again. If your user id or your net work configuration parameter were right, then you get The connection test was successful.

Then Close the window and click Finish. Notice that the MYACCESS service name was added to the list of Service Name.

If you go and open your tnsnames.ora file you should be able to see the new entry (MYACCESS) in the file.

Open the MS explorer and check the file in (%ORACLE_HOME.ORA)
